Politics Bulgaria is slowly starting to recover from the state emergency situation that blizzards and severe weather have caused in many parts of the country. After two days being closed, Varna port has returned into operation on Saturday and local municipality launched all equipment and workforce available to clean up snow-blocked streets and roads. Rescue services fought to transport nine baby-delivering women through the snow drifts to hospitals in Eastern Bulgaria. The blizzards and freezing weather took the lives of two elderly people - a woman and a man - and forced authorities in Bulgaria to declare a state of emergency in 35 municipalities and nine districts. More than 140 villages were left without electricity and 72 continue to be deprived of running water because of the damages incurred by the stormy winds. The army has sent 160 tracked vehicles and several hundreds of soldiers to help local authorities transport patients needing urgent treatment and deliver food supplies to villages cut off from any communication. Meteorologists forecast a freezing weekend for Bulgaria with temperatures dropping to minus 18 on Sunday and Monday until the Mediterranean cyclone draws off the country.
